What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a therapeutic discipline based upon artistic media and processes where creation is the tool used to help with expression and conflict resolution. Art therapy integrates the person in a creative way in their own healing process.

Working with images enhances personal development and promotes healthy functioning as it allows the expression of emotions without experiencing too much anxiety, integrating the internal world into the external world through reflection, thereby promoting different viewpoints, and promotes growth.

Through Art Therapy, the activation of personal and individual resources is intended to achieve maximum freedom and self-regulation on a day-to-day basis.

Depending on the context, art therapy is applied for the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of psychological problems; i.e. psychosomatic disorders, biographical crises, difficulties related to development, serious and chronic diseases and in supporting people of all ages.

There are different approaches to art therapy. At Gmarch Psicólogos, I follow the one which gives importance to the reflection that arises during and from the artistic process itself. The therapist has an active role proposing specific exercises and creating spaces of containment with their own behavior.

I also offer Anthroposophic Art Therapy (BVAKT) ® which is based on guidelines of anthroposophic medicine registered in the German Patent and Trademark Office, and whose medical benefit and economic efficiency were scientifically demonstrated from 1998 to 2005 in the Anthroposophic Medicine Outcome Study (AMOS).
